Job Description

MEDICAL

§ Ensuring compliance with veterinary ethics and relevant statutes, policies, and procedures.

§ General consultations and clinical assessment and examining patients and diagnosing their medical issues.

§ Conducting laboratory tests on specimens to diagnose medical conditions.

§ Performing diagnostic imaging and ultrasound tests.

§ Promoting preventative care by advocating and administering routine vaccinations, and by educating clients on positive diet and lifestyle choices for pets.

§ Improving patients’ dental health by performing checkups, and cleaning and extracting teeth.

§ Maintaining patients’ medical records.

§ Emergency procedures and patient stabilization, fluid Rx

§ Advise customer regarding sanitary measures, feeding, general care, medical conditions, or treatment options.

§ Keep records for all medical and non-medical supplies.

§ Offer a high-quality standard in the treatment of sick animal holed in boarding

§ Keep high hygienic standard in the clinic

§ Access individual patient issues, and provide appropriate solutions

§ Competently handles surgical complications and rechecks

o SURGICAL TECHNIQUES & SKILLS

§ Examine animals pre-operatively to determine their ability to withstand surgery

§ Perform surgical sterilizations

§ Perform surgery, dressing and treating wounds, and prescribing medication.

§ Examine animals post-operatively to ensure appropriate healing

§ Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow up care

§ Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by staff.

§ Supervise post-operative rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery

§ Ensure all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients

§ Adheres to asept techniques while scrubbing, gowning, and gloving

§ Adheres to sterile field throughout the surgical process

§ Understands and can explain basic anesthesia

o GENERAL

§ Communicates objectives, motivates staff, builds and maintains morale; maintains core values and standards.

§ Provide input and communicate any issues regarding the clinic’s disease control protocols, surgical protocols, or other medical issues at regular Veterinarian meetings or with the Practice Manager as appropriate

§ Communicate effectively with Practice Manager, to keep management apprised of all out of the ordinary situations

§ Competently performs and teaches CPR and other emergency measures

§ Takes an active role in practice staff meetings.

§ Promotes cooperative working environment among staff members; understands the value of teamwork; shows enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the practice function as a unit.

§ Effectively critiques breaks in sterility

§ Effectively critiques and suggests additional disease control measures

§ Understands and practices low stress animal handling

§ Communicates effectively with clients and colleagues

§ Make reasonable and sensible medical decisions

§ Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols

§ Communicate any issues concerning staff or patients with Practice Manager.

§ Euthanizing patients.

§ Counsel clients about the deaths of their pets or about euthanasia decisions for their pets.

§ Understands and carries out oral and written directions.

§ Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.

§ Promotes continuous quality improvement.

§ Always behave in a manner that upholds both personal and professional standards, as an ambassador of the International Animal Care.

§ Train any designated persons in all aspects of patient care and efficie clinic practices, maintaining a professional and friendly manner always

§ Performs other duties as assigned.

1.0 Skills and Abilities

§ Feel and express a genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal care environment.

§ Must be able to work under the broad general administrative supervision of the owners and doctors, and to be able to use sound personal judgment in selecting methods, establishing priorities, and arriving at conclusions

§ Must be able to tactfully demonstrate “take charge” capabilities.

§ May be required to work uncommon hours, overtime, and be subject to recall in emergency situations.

§ Deal intelligibly, pleasantly and efficiently with clients on the telephone and in person, often doing several things at one time.

§ Display tact and diplomacy with staff members and clients.

§ Work almost constantly in the presence of other staff members and clients.

§ Be flexible in attitude and work habits.

§ Quickly learn how to pronounce, know the meaning of and spell commonly used veterinary terms.

§ Perform basic computer skills, type 45 words per minute and to use a 10 key calculator.

§ Physical Effort:

Work requires lifting and carrying records and equipment weighting up to 25 lbs; requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

§ Working conditions:

May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces.

May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
